Knockhill Gears Up for Biggest British Touring Car Championship Grid of the Season

Scotland’s national motorsport circuit is preparing to welcome thousands of fans next month as the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) returns to Knockhill with its largest grid of the season so far.

The highly anticipated event, taking place on 8 and 9 August, is expected to attract around 15,000 spectators and will feature 23 BTCC cars, the highest entry level seen at any championship round during the 2026 season to date. The expanded field includes returning driver Nick Halstead alongside Glasgow racer Dexter Patterson, while 22-year-old Scotsman Lewis Gilbert joins the championship grid following his recent debut at Thruxton.

For Knockhill, the event represents more than just another championship weekend. According to Stuart Gray, Director of Events at Knockhill, this year's meeting includes several milestones, including the introduction of a Saturday BTCC race and a record 89 laps of touring car action across the weekend. Fans will also be able to cheer on four Scottish drivers competing in the UK’s premier tin-top series, with Gordon Shedden, Aiden Moffat, Dexter Patterson and Lewis Gilbert all taking part.

The BTCC action will be supported by an extensive race programme featuring Minis, Porsches, Caterhams and the Scottish Legends Championship, creating a packed schedule of 19 races across the two days. The Scottish Legends race is also expected to feature a full grid of 34 cars, making it one of the largest races many competitors will have experienced.

One of the stories attracting particular interest is the arrival of Lewis Gilbert at Knockhill. Despite being one of Scotland’s emerging motorsport talents, Gilbert has limited experience of the Fife circuit, having previously only competed on stages used during the Border Access rally earlier this year. His first experience of racing the circuit in its conventional format will therefore come under the spotlight of a BTCC weekend and in front of thousands of spectators.

The continued popularity of the BTCC at Knockhill highlights the circuit’s importance within Scotland’s sporting events calendar and its contribution to attracting visitors from across the UK. With a packed race schedule, strong Scottish representation and the largest championship grid of the season, the event is set to deliver another memorable weekend for motorsport fans and visitors alike.
