Religion and belief informs and impacts on almost every aspect of human life. In this half-day course, staff will improve their confidence in working with the faith or beliefs of colleagues and service-users. We begin by exploring the role that choice plays in relation to religious beliefs, and how our perception of choice can create a sense that Religion and Belief is distinct from other Protected Characteristics of the Equality Act. Through an interactive chronology of religions exercise, participants explore key differences and similarities between six main faiths. We learn about the core beliefs and cultural practices of these faiths, and the individual needs that may arise from a person’s religion or belief identity (including non-religious beliefs). Lastly we discuss how to avoid unintentional discrimination, while meeting the requirements of the organisation.

Learning Objectives - by the end of the course delegates will be able to:

• Distinguish between experiences of both believing and belonging in relation to religious identity
• Discuss how Religion and Belief compares to other Protected Characteristics like Race, Age and Disability
• Explore key similarities across six main UK faiths: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism
• Summarise the core beliefs and cultural practices of these faiths
• Identify some of the common misperceptions and stereotypes to avoid
• Describe some of the needs arising from religious beliefs, and how to avoid unintentional discrimination in their own context
