Understanding Autism

This session will be delivered by Elevate Training and Consultancy, Scottish Autism, and is for Modern Apprenticeship Learning Providers

Please note this is an in-person event at Skills Development Scotland premises- Monteith House, Glasgow.

This workshop explores autism as a neurodevelopmental difference and will enable learning providers to begin to create a neuro-affirming approach to supporting apprentices who identify as autistic

Participants will gain an understanding of autism within the context of neurodiversity, including differences in communication, interaction, thinking styles, and sensory experiences. The workshop also encourages reflection on attitudes and language, while offering practical strategies to reduce barriers to learning.

By the end of the workshops, you will have a better of autistic neurology and understand how to apply this to your own practice.

Learning Outcomes

· Understand autism as a developmental difference in the broader context of neurodiversity and how our knowledge of autism has evolved over time.

· Reflect on your own thoughts, assumption and use of language and how these shape the experience of autistic apprentices.

· Recognise autism as a difference in communication, interaction, thinking and movement and how this might influence learning, processing and understanding.

· Identify sensory differences and consider how these influence how someone interacts or feels within specific environments.

· Start to apply learning to your own practice.
