Aberdour's Silver Sands transformation complete

Visitors to Aberdour's Silver Sands can now enjoy improved facilities and easier access to the beach following a £1.3 million upgrade. 

The improvements have created a more welcoming, accessible and sustainable destination. They include upgraded visitor facilities, improved access to the beach and better support for active travel. 

This project was funded through a partnership of national and local investment. VisitScotland's Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund contributed £750,000. The Scottish Government's Place Based Investment Programme provided a further £400,000. An additional £150,000 had already been secured for the works. 

Caroline Warburton, Destination Development Director at VisitScotland said: “The improvements to Aberdour’s Silver Sands demonstrate how targeted investment in visitor management infrastructure and a partnership approach can help communities manage popular sites and improve the overall experience for local people, day trip visitors and tourists. 

"By upgrading visitor facilities, encouraging sustainable travel options and significantly improving accessibility to the beach and its facilities, the project will help ensure everyone, both residents and visitors can continue to enjoy this much-loved beach." 

Newlay Civil Eng Ltd began the improvements last autumn and completed the project on time and within budget this summer.  The completed improvements include: 

• Improved parking facilities 
• Dedicated coach and motorhome parking areas 
• Secure cycle parking 
• Additional recycling bins 

• New seating and visitor amenities 
• New active travel route linking the upper section of Hawkcraig Road to the Fife Coastal Path 

A range of accessibility improvements have also been delivered, including: 

• Upgrading toilets including a new changing places toilet, supported through PAMIS funding in partnership with Fife Coast and Countryside Trust and Fife Council
• Two boardwalks allowing easier access to the beach 
• Path network along beachfront 
• Handrails 
• 21 enhanced parking spaces for blue badge holders 

• Three EV dual charging units 
• Picnic tables

The investment addresses infrastructure pressures caused by high visitor numbers while helping protect the area's natural environment. It also supports walking, wheeling and cycling, making it easier for more people to enjoy the beach. 

Councillor Altany Craik, Fife Council Spokesperson for Finance, Economy and Strategic Planning, said: "Silver Sands is one of Fife's most treasured coastal destinations. These improvements have created a more welcoming experience for everyone. 

"The investment supports sustainable tourism while helping protect this special place for future generations." 

Councillor Dave Dempsey, South and West Fife area convener, said: "Silver Sands is one of Aberdour's best-loved assets and an important part of community life. The improvements completed through this project will benefit local people while helping support businesses that rely on visitors to the area. 

"From better facilities to improved accessibility, the investment will make the beach easier to enjoy and help ensure Silver Sands continues to be a destination that residents and visitors return to year after year." 

Although the improvements are complete, there’s still more to look forward to as next year a beach wheelchair scheme will be introduced at Silver Sands. This will provide all-terrain wheelchairs with large tyres designed to roll easily over sand. We'll let you know when this new feature is available at Silver Sands.
