Moove over…there’s a new attraction in town!
Have you ‘herd’ about the latest attraction at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries?
It’s the crème de la crème and it is providing visitors with great ‘amoosement’.
The spectacle – which has had lots of people saying “cheese” – is an udderly eye-catching collection of brightly decorated cows.
The Carnegie Coos, as they’ve become affectionately known, were officially put out to pasture in the gardens of the DCLG this week, although some had already taken up residence over the past few weeks where they have already become firm favourites with young and old alike.
The cows came about after the venue acted as a temporary caretaker for the Herd on the Hill project until a site was ready for them in Dunfermline Park.
Tracy McCafferty, Venue Manager of DCLG, explained: “Everyone who saw them loved them and we had lots of people coming to get photos with them. We would have loved them to stay but they weren’t ours.
“Sadly, they weren’t long in the park before there was a problem with vandalism. They were moved for their safety and one came back to us.
“In the meantime, the chairman of the Dunfermline Central Community Council, who had helped organise the original project, had gone back to the artists and said how much we loved them and he wanted to help us fund our own herd.
“Fife Council agreed to provide some funding and we were also able to contribute so we were able to get our own herd, which is now in our garden against the beautiful backdrop of the Abbey.
“We are delighted to have been able to do this and want to thank everyone who has helped make this a reality.”
The four cows – Hermoine, Lou, Kingdom and Maggie – are all individually decorated on different themes and have been designed under the guidance of local artists Vanessa Gibson, Carolyn Higgins and Olga Krasanova, with one decorated by youngsters from Fife Young Carers group and another of the original herd by children from St Margaret’s and Commercial Primary Schools.
They are now a permanent feature of the Galleries’ gardens and can be seen during the venue’s opening hours.
See the venue’s page at www.onfife.com for details of opening times.
